Background

The Spanish galleon had a decisive influence on the golden age of seafaring in the 16th and 17th centuries. As a hybrid between warship and merchant ship, it revolutionized maritime trade and naval warfare. These mighty ships not only transported valuable goods between the continents, but also formed the backbone of the Spanish Armada. Its robust construction and ability to carry both cargo and cannons made it the preferred type of ship of its time.
