| When writing about the medical service in the Red Army during the German-Soviet war, also called the Great Patriotic War in the USSR, in the years 1941-1945, it must first of all be stated that it was largely feminized. It is often estimated that 43% of surgeons, 46% of all doctors, 57% of medical assistants and almost 100% of nurses in the Red Army were women at that time. Secondly, unfortunately, this medical service - compared to analogous services in the German or British armies - stood at a relatively low level. First of all, the availability of high-quality surgical equipment, dressings and basic medications was lower than in the British or American armies. Many Red Army infantrymen, going to attack, did not have personal medical equipment - especially in the initial period of the German-Soviet war. Also, the equipment of Soviet nurses was often of lower quality than that of the German paramedics. It was also not a rule that motor vehicles were used to transport the wounded to the rear. | |||
