The 9M96 is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by Russia. It is part of the S-350E Vityaz missile system, which is a medium-range SAM system designed to defend against planes, cruise missiles, and drones.

 

The 9M96 missile is the primary SAM used by the S-350E Vityaz system. It has a range of up to 120 kilometers (75 miles) and can reach altitudes of up to 27,000 meters (88,500 feet). The missile is equipped with a passive homing seeker and is designed to engage a variety of targets, including low-flying aircraft and missiles.

 

The 9M96 missile is launched from a mobile transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) called the 50P6E TEL. The TEL is based on a modified KamAZ-6560 truck and can carry up to four missiles in a vertical launch configuration. The TEL is equipped with a radar system that can detect and track incoming threats, and can be used to engage targets or under manual control.

 

The S-350E Vityaz missile system was first deployed by the Russian military in 2018 and has been used in some military exercises and operations. It is considered a significant improvement over earlier Russian SAM systems and is seen as an important part of Russia’s air defense capabilities.
